OMO advert CSP blog tasks

 1) What year was the advert produced?

This advert was produced in 1955.

2) How were women represented in most adverts in the 1950s? Add as much detail to this answer as you can as these are the social, cultural and historical contexts we will need to write about in the exam.

Women were represented as oversexualised and their faces has a lot of makeup to make them look perfect.

3) How does the heading message ('OMO makes whites bright') and the style of the text promote the product?

This will want to make the audience (mainly women) gain interest in buying this product because it says 'OMO makes whites looks bright', this will mean that this will save time for women to consistently keep washing over and over again.

4) Analyse the mise-en-scene in the advert (CLAMPS): how is costume, make-up and placement of the model used to suggest women's role in society?

The costume the women is wearing looks very bright coloured and you will notice her sleeve is rolled up which mean that they should be doing hard work. Her makeup is perfect because women still have to look good even when they are at home.

5) Why is a picture of the product added to the bottom right of the advert?

To make the audience actually see the product of how it looks like and how it is represented.

6) What are the connotations of the chosen colours in this advert - red, white and blue?

The colours are very bright and you can rarely see any marks on the clothes that the woman is wearing. The connotations for the colour are joy, bright, and happiness.

7) How does the anchorage text use persuasive language to encourage the audience to buy the product? Give examples.

This is because the repetition of the words 'White and Bright' encourages the audience to buy the product so there clothes are as white as the clouds.

8) What representation of women can be found in this OMO advert? Make specific reference to the advert and discuss stereotypes.

The stereotype here is that women should be housewives and they should be happy by being a housewife as you can tell from the lady's facial expression. Also, mothers in order to protect  male power both at work and at home.

9) What is the preferred reading for this advert - what did the producers of the advert want the audience to think in 1955?

That women were the people who did the washing and cleaning.

10) What is the oppositional reading for this advert - how might a modern audience respond to this text and the representation of women here?

They would respond by saying that the advert is sexist because the advert is trying to say that women should be doing washing and cleaning.
